Dedication Ceremony for New Drilling Rig
On 11 December 2015, Kone Kmeng conducted a “Dedication Ceremony for the New Drilling Rig” in Svay Rieng province with the special presence of Mr. Pang Sophany (Director of Kone Kmeng) and Mr. Hok Borey (Director of Rural Department of Svay Rieng province).
Mr. Hok Borey addressed warm greetings to Kone Kmeng and gathered guests at the ceremony to proclaim the new drilling rig helpful for poor people to have an available water source. He really thanked Kone Kmeng for do all the hard work to help the poor people in his communities.
As the Director/Co-Founder of Kone Kmeng, Mr. Pang Sophany presented that: in 2007, Kone Kmeng selected Svay Rieng province as the first target area to drill wells. After some research, Kone Kmeng decided that buying its own drilling rig was more cost effective than hiring a drilling company to drill wells for the project. The first rig which Kone Kmeng bought was an old, second-hand, put together rig, made from various other machine parts. It could dig about 40 meters only. Despite that, many people were helped. But the needs were great and the rig lasted around 2 years. In 2010, Rob Rolleman came to visit and saw the condition of the rig and the great need in Svay Rieng. He went back home to Canada and raised funds so Kone Kmeng was able to purchase a stronger second-hand, put together rig made in Cambodia which could drill up to 60 meters. This has allowed the staff to drill many water wells in Svay Rieng and Prey Veng provinces. Since that time until mid-2015, Kone Kmeng has been able to provide 664 water wells, 2300 water filters, plus 516 latrines. The number of beneficiaries include 8432 families or 55,353 people.
Although the rig has been a blessing for many, it’s old, so breaks down often. It’s also limited in that it cannot drill through rocky soil, and only can drill to 60 meters. So then, it was decided to purchase a new drilling rig. He added that the new drilling rig cost $80,000 USD. This new automatic rig can drill to 150 meters deep, even through rock, and it can move easily to other provinces. So Kone Kmeng will continue to support poor people not just in Svay Rieng but other provinces that need water. This is a great blessing from the Lord for Kone Kmeng to keep His vision for us to help the poor people.s
Finally, he thanked God for always providing everything that is needed. Special thanks also to Willow Creek Church and Wine to Water organization as the major donors for the Clean Water and Sanitation project.
The event was concluded with prayers and ribbon cutting to officially start up the use of the new drilling rig. A demonstration of the machine and fellowship meal followed, continuing to show God’s love for all.
